brat

She spat the word “brat”
Indifferently
Tossing it aside like a coat
Unaffected
By the impact it could have had
But the tension gave it away
A slight twitch of her lips
A strange spark in her eyes
As she looked down at the floor
Muttering out loud, “brat”
At that particular moment
I knew and she knew I knew
There was yearning in the feigned disinterest
An unexplained desire to close the gap in between
There was “brat” lying in the middle
A grotesque symbol of what could have been
The love that might have been
And which ceased to exist before it even began
Until only one empty swear remained
Brat! Just a brat!
